100 Years Ago

June 23, 1921

   Al Lambert, caretaker of Kabekona Camp at Woman Lake, was a Walker visitor the first of this week.  

   The joy of life is like a weed in the garden. No matter how much we stamp it out, it creeps right back in again.

   Quite a number of young men from Turtle Lake had a fish fry at the sand beach on Leech Lake.

June 21, 1946

   Quite a number of folks from Boy Lake attended the wedding of Marylee Anderson and Olaf Erickson last Sunday at Boy River.

   The Remer community extends a warm welcome to Mrs. Richard Hayward and two children. Mr. Hayward has been here several months serving as the village policeman.

June 11, 1996

   The Finnelly graveyard is about a mile northeast of Hackensack in a small clearing at the end of a rugged path known as the Stony Lake Trail. There are 32 graves located there. In 1985 Hackensack American Legion Auxiliary adopted this cemetery and has had memorial services every year. A permanent marker has been put up.

  The Ladies Auxiliary to VFW Post 772 presented “Certificates of Appreciation” to Goldie Wiesner and Gloria White. Gloria sews baby hats and mittens for newborns at St. Joseph Hospital in Brainerd and makes ditty bags. Gloria makes Easter and Christmas favors, and other gifts for 68 veterans at Ah Gwah Ching.

   Derek Sumption shot an 80 and outlasted two Roseau golfers in a 5-hole tie breaker to gain a berth in the Class A 1996 Minnesota State High School Golf tournament.
