Take a step back in time during the Remer Centennial History Crawl

As part of the Remer Centennial celebration year, the Remer Area Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring a "History Crawl" scheduled for Saturday, June 18th. Special activities are happening at the Soo Line Depot from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. A featured event is Bud and Mick, two large dapple grey percherons owned by Ed Nelson, of Wood en Horse Logging. Nelson and his team will be demonstrating logging techniques from the early 1900's. Nelson, who also works at the Forest History Center in Grand Rapids, logs and farms with his draft horses. According to Nelson, "Draft horses are capable of generating a great deal of power. If they are properly trained and fitted with harness they can move loads many times their own weight." They pulled logging sleighs, plowed fields, and provided transportation to and from places people needed to go. Draft horses, sometimes called gentle giants, are an integral part of America's history. Along with the horses, there will be photographs and artifacts from the big timber-logging era. Test your skill with a cross cut saw and try walking like a horse. Don't forget to bring your camera.

Inside the Depot will be additional photo and video displays and exhibits of Remer's history. Renee Geving from the Cass County Museum will be there to share her knowledge of 'The History of Remer' and other compilations by her and Cecelia McKeig. Tom Witherow will preform old time piano music, and St. Paul's Catholic Church is providing a delicious lunch from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm. Remer Centennial commemorative merchandise will be available for purchase too.

Pick up a walking history brochure and take a stroll down Main Street to learn about some of Remer's early development and see what occupies these historical sites now. For example, the building that housed Remer Drug & Variety until the mid 90's and is now Remer Arts & Crafts, will have author Margo Hansen doing a book signing of her new book "Sky's Bridal Train," an inspirational romance about a young woman who travels to the north woods of Minnesota by wagon train in search of her twin sister. Special book pricing and coupons for Remer Arts & Crafts is being offered. Other merchants will be offering specials for the Crawl, like 10 paperbacks for 100 cents ($1.00) at the Second Chance Thrift Store, in-house taste samplings from Northwoods Meats, nickel coffee at the Woodsman Café, plus specials at the Remer Muni and more.

The Historic Walking Tour brochures will be available at the Depot as well as throughout downtown. The Chamber invites everyone to be a part of the Remer Village Centennial year celebration.
