September Food Shelf Challenge grant

Hunger Solutions Minnesota and Open Your Heart to the Hungry and Homeless announce $100,000 Food Shelf Challenge Grant.

Grant funds will enable food shelves to obtain food to distribute to those in need and raise awareness of hunger and the needs of hungry families in your community.

Challenge funds will proportionally match your donation (the minimum grant is $250). The more donations food shelves receive in September, the larger your food shelf's Open Your Heart grant will be.

In 2009, Longville Area Food Shelf served 203 households (unduplicated number). For the year, this consisted of 307 senior citizens, 1,507 children and 2,265 adults. One in 10 Minnesotans relied on food shelves for 60 million pounds of groceries in 2009. That translates to a 24 percent statewide increase over 2008. Longville Area food shelf has shown a 126 percent increase since 2004.

Please help support your food shelf by making a donation during the month of September in order for matching funds to boost the food shelf's buying power.
