PINE RIVER - The Pine River-Backus Relay for Life will be held on Friday June 18 at the Pine River-Backus Track and Field. The gates open to the public at 5 p.m., and the opening ceremony begins at 7 p.m., with the luminary ceremony to follow at dusk. The Fight Back ceremony will be done under the lights around 11 p.m.

The Relay For Life is a fun way to raise money in the fight against cancer. Teams consist of eight to 15 people and each team member must raise $100. Team members acquire donations to meet their $100 goal and a single donation of $10 allows the donor to dedicate a luminary either in memory or honor of a cancer patient. The opening ceremony honors the area cancer survivors. The luminary lighting ceremony takes place at dusk and it is a very moving experience. The team members walk through the night by the light of the luminaries. Campsites are set up along the track and can have themes and sell different items or have games with all the proceeds going to the American Cancer Society.

Cancer has touched all of us in one way or another. The Relay allows participants to fight back for our family members, co-workers, and friends. It gives them the chance to do something and make a difference in their lives and the lives of those that will be diagnosed this year and in the years to come.

We are asking all who attend this year to bring a favorite recipe to be used in the "Taste of Relay" cookbook. We will compile all the recipes and have ready for next spring as part of the Relay For Life fundraiser.
