Nonprofits Receive Over $94,000 in Initiative Foundation Grants


The Initiative Foundation announced that it has awarded 17 community grants totaling over $94,950 to support local projects. The following organizations were selected as grant recipients:

City of Big Lake; International Economic Development Council (IEDC) Business Retention and Expansion Training - $300 scholarship to attend a conference that helps participants understand how to evaluate their regional economy and help design a responsive business retention and expansion support program.

City of Braham; Phase II HCP Implementation - $8,900 to improve local parks, develop active recreation facilities and to create and implement a fundraising plan to complete a community center.

City of Holdingford; Holding in Partnership Implementation - $9,000 to improve the downtown, enhance community greenspace around the Lake Wobegon trail, and to design and raise funds for the renovation of a historic building that will be used as a local museum.

Cuyuna Range Youth Center, Crosby; Project Teen - $3,500 to support the programs and operations of a center that provides positive after-school activities to low-income, at-risk youth.

Family Education Center of Wright County, Buffalo; Wright County Inside Out Connections Coalition - $5,000 to support the coalition's efforts to provide training for caregivers of children of incarcerated parents, implement family education opportunities and enhance parent education in the jail.[[In-content Ad]]Leech Lake Area Watershed Foundation, Hackensack; Water Quality Projects in Boy River Watershed - $5,000 to support efforts by the Baby, Kerr, Kid, Lost, Man and McKeown Lakes Association to restore shoreland using native species, to develop education and prevention programs for aquatic invasive species, and to monitor water quality.

LegalCORPS of St. Cloud, Minneapolis; Volunteer Lawyer Services - $3,000 to provide services in central Minnesota connecting volunteer lawyers with small businesses and nonprofits.

North Branch Area Schools; Early Childhood Coalition - $2,500 to continue early childhood coalition efforts that work toward promoting a healthy start for our youngest children and their families in the North Branch area.

Pine Technical College, Pine City; Entrepreneurship Center & Technology Business Incubator - $5,000 to provide technical assistance as they design a center on the college campus that will promote and encourage entrepreneurship and technology-related businesses.

Red Lake Band of Chippewa Indians; NMTEDC Organizational Development and Strategic Plan - $5,000 to guide strategies for creating and retaining more businesses and employment opportunities on the Leech Lake, Red Lake and White Earth Band reservations.

Region Five Development Commission, Staples; Micropolitan Planning Project - $15,000 to help communities in the Gull Lake Watershed protect natural resources by coordinating planning and zoning across city/township boundaries and identifying opportunities to share costs and reduce bureaucracy. This grant is made possible by support from the U.S. Department of Agriculture - Rural Development.

Roosevelt and Lawrence Area Lakes Association, Mendota Heights; Water Quality Protection Project - $5,000 to preserve water quality through identification of problem wastewater treatment systems, provide education on aquatic invasive plant species, and encourage shoreland restoration with native plants.

St. Cloud Downtown Council; Urban Market - $1,750 to support organization and marketing of a multi-cultural outdoor market in downtown St. Cloud.

St. Cloud State University Foundation; Winter Institute - $11,000 to support a regional economic development conference.

Stearns County Soil and Water Conservation District, Waite Park; Big Fish Lake -Conservation Reserve and Lakescaping Projects - $5,000 to work with one farmer and at least two shoreland residents to modify practices to reduce nutrient laden runoff.

St. Cloud School District; Jumpstart Project - $5,000 to support intensive English language education for up to 200 students (grades K-12) from non-English speaking homes in the St. Cloud area.

Wadena County Humane Society; Tornado Aid - $5,000 to provide operating costs associated with receiving animals displaced by the recent tornado, and to recruit, train and support volunteers associated with this effort.

The Initiative Foundation seeks projects that strengthen central Minnesota communities and address barriers to economic development. Inquiries for applications are accepted on an ongoing basis and are generally reviewed within three weeks of receipt.
