Longville's Turtle race season starts today!

There's a fresh coat of paint in the middle of Main Street in Downtown Longville, signaling the start of another season of Turtle Racing. The first Turtle Race of the season will be Wednesday, June 8.

Although the turtle races are considered the main event for the day, there are many events and activities for families to participate in before and during the turtle races. Food vendors will also be on Main Street offering a variety of goodies to delight the entire family.

Longville's Main Street closes down to traffic at 12:30 p.m., to accommodate the setting up "Turtle Mobile," games, ticket booth, prize tables, and food stands. Registration begins at 1 p.m.; contests begin around 1:15 p.m.; games are played 1 to 3 p.m. Races are started with a Resort Turtle Race, followed by turtle racing action from 2 to 3:30 p.m.[[In-content Ad]]

Race registration fee includes the use of a turtle and the opportunity to win prizes. Participants may bring a turtle, with a shell of at least five inches in diameter. They are subject to a registration fee.

Races are held rain or shine, but may be cancelled for downpours, storm warnings or lightning.

The Longville Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce sponsors the Turtle races each Wednesday throughout the summer, with an additional race on the Fourth of July.

The chamber is in need of volunteers to to assist in Turtle Racing games and activities during the summer. Anyone interested should contact Judy Blundell at Ron's Hardware at (218) 363-2050 or Tenlee Lund 363-2914.
