Erin Hart, author and Paddy O'Brien to visit Longville Library March 1

Author Erin Hart and Irish musician Paddy O'Brien will visit Kitchigami Libraries as "Artists in Residency" during February and March. Erin Hart and Paddy O'Brien will be at the Longville Public Library on Tuesday, March 1st . The author reading will be at 11:00 a.m., followed by the workshops at 12:00 noon.

Erin Hart is the author of a series of crime novels set in Ireland that revolve around archeology, forensics, history, traditional music and folklore. While visiting Ireland one summer, Erin heard an intriguing tale about a beautiful red-haired girl whose perfectly preserved severed head was discovered in a desolate Irish bog. That true story was the inspiration for her debut novel, Haunted Ground. The third book in the series, False Mermaid, was published in March 2010.[[In-content Ad]]

Erin Hart will visit Kitchigami Libraries for a celebration of the bogs "artist in residency." Erin will present an author reading, and a "Writing From Place" workshop. Erin will be joined by her husband, button box accordion player Paddy O'Brien, who will add a "wee bit of Irish music" to set the mood for Erin's reading. Paddy, who's been called a walking encyclopedia of Traditional Irish Music will offer an Irish music workshop as well.

Erin Hart Workshop

Writing from Place: What's in Your Site Kit?

Erin Hart writes a mystery series set in Ireland (and occasionally in Minnesota). In this 90-minute workshop, Erin will talk about how she conjures up vivid settings, convincing readers that they're walking the peat bogs of Ireland and digging up ancient treasures. Just as archaeologists wield the tools of their trade trowel and brush writers also have many tools at their disposal. Erin will talk about her research and all the various items she keeps in her writer's site kit, then ask participants to assemble their own kits, and use them to create unforgettable places.

Paddy O'Brien Workshop

Sitting by the Fire: Where Irish Traditional Music Lives.

Button accordion master Paddy O'Brien first began playing Irish traditional music as a child, growing up in a thatched house outside the village of Daingean, County Offaly, in the Irish midlands. Today he plays and records all over the world, and leads three traditional ensembles, but he has never strayed from the philosophy of sharing music, passing along his vast store of tunes and lore to the next generation, as they were passed along to him. Paddy will talk about the long history of Irish music and the various instruments that have found a home in the tradition, and about the social settings for Irish music the session, the house party, the ceili dance.

This event is free of charge. Please register for the workshops by stopping by or calling the Longville Library at 218-363-2710.

The Erin Hart and Paddy O'Brien "Artists in Residency" at Kitchigami Libraries is part of the Kitchigami Reads/Kitchigami Writes Legacy project with funding from the Minnesota Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.
