Do something 'Alarming' during fire prevention week

ST. PAUL - More than 3,000 fire deaths occurred in the U.S. in 2009 - 35 in Minnesota. That reflects well on our state, statistically. But one statistic did not. The number of fire victims who died in homes without working smoke alarms was 40 percent nationally and 42 percent in Minnesota - despite a Minnesota law requiring a smoke alarm on every level and one in every sleeping area. These numbers are the reason for the 2009 National Fire Prevention Week theme, "Smoke Alarms: A Sound You Can Live With."

Fire Prevention Week, Now through Oct. 9, is sponsored by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) to build awareness of fire causes and safety measures. According to the NFPA, advanced warning increases the chance of surviving any building fire by 50 percent.[[In-content Ad]]State Fire Marshal Jerry Rosendahl says t most homes in Minnesota have smoke alarms, "But what we don't know is how many of them are working. Without regular testing, they can create a false sense of security."

Rosendahl says that fire deaths in Minnesota are declining, and the keys to continuing the trend are personal responsibility by residents and public education efforts by schools, fire personnel and the media.

"We need everyone to see and hear our message and share it with others: install smoke alarms or test the ones you have. Practice a fire escape plan at home. And never think it can't happen to you. It can, and your State Fire Marshal Division is committed to helping you survive. We ask that you make a similar commitment during Fire Prevention Week."
