Backus Legion to host Corn Fest August 13-15

   The Backus American Legion, Sons of the Legion, Auxiliary and Backus Senior Center are sponsoring several entertaining events in conjunction with the community’s annual Corn Fest Celebration Aug. 13-15.

   The Legion kicks off the weekend with a meat raffle at 5:30 p.m. on Friday the 13. Chef’s choice sandwiches will be served from 5 p.m. until gone.

Horseshoe and bean bag tournaments start Saturday at 1 p.m., with registration starting at noon. During the competition, there will be an outdoor beer bar. Following the 2 p.m. parade, there will be a Visiting Veterans Parade Units Reception. Luncheon will begin at 3 p.m. Another meat raffle will be held at 6:30 p.m. Closing out an eventful day will be free cash and customer drawings at 9 p.m. On Sunday, you can rock out with the Frankie Lamb Band from 2 to 5 p.m. Wrapping up Legion sponsored events will be a Fur & Feathers 4H Club Benefit Chicken Dinner from 5 p.m. until gone.

   The Backus Senior Center will be sponsoring events at the Center. On Saturday a huge food lineup will be available from 8 until 10:30 a.m., including jumbo cinnamon and caramel rolls, sausage, and egg and cheese muffins. After 10:30, food will switch to grilled burgers and hot dogs. Bingo starts at 3 p.m. All ages welcome!

   As well as sponsored events, there will be other events around town. On Friday at 5:30 p.m. at Foothills Christian Academy, a free will donation dinner will be held with all donations going to future reunions. From 6:30 until 10:30 p.m., a Cornfest food booth will be open on Front Street. Get your boogie on with the “Wayne Renn Band” at Willards.

  Saturday’s events begin bright and early at 7:30 a.m. with pre-registration for the 5k run at Foothills Christian Academy, regular registration at 8 a.m. From 8 a.m. until 7 p.m., the vendor and craft fair by Front Street will be taking place. Beginning at the same time and going until 11 a.m. is the Kids Fishing Tournament at Rocky Dock. Grab lunch at the Backus City Fire Hall starting at 11 a.m. Children’s games such as a money scramble, cake walk, corn eating contest and more will start at noon on Front Street. A half an hour later at Foothills Christian Academy, the lineup for the CornFest Parade starts. The parade begins at 2 p.m., with the theme “Dreams Come True Under the Red White and Blue.” On Front Street 4 to 7 p.m., there will be an Adult Fishing Bowl Tournament. Starting at 5 p.m. at Foothills Christian Academy, is a Battle of the Bands. Hit Front Street at 7 p.m. for a street dance and a beer garden, with live music from the “Zakk Grandahl Band.”  As soon as dusk hits, make sure to watch fireworks light up the sky.

   The vendor and craft fair begins again at 8 a.m. Sunday and goes until 4 p.m. Church service begins at 10 a.m. at the Nazerene Church, with a bouncy house for the kids and hot dogs for the family. At Willards, a 50/50 drawing will be drawn at noon. At the same time, registration for the truck and motorcycle show will begin, with the show starting at 1 p.m. and concluding all of the weekends events at 5 p.m.
