  Information for 100, 75, 50 and 25  year news briefs was researched and gathered by Renee Geving and Cec McKeig from Cass County newspaper archives at the Cass County Historical Society.    

100 Years Ago

March 18, 1926

   Keen foresight is a good thing all right, but the man who looks too far ahead doesn’t always see what’s going on behind his back.

   Fire of unknown origin starting in the basement of the public school building at Onigum early Friday morning destroyed the building. Only the piano and some chairs were saved.

   School is still closed in Longville. This has been the worst epidemic to visit our community as nearly every family is having a protracted session of measles, and now chicken pox is reported here also.

 75 Years Ago

March 16, 1951

   In Federal Dam: Mr. and Mrs. Bader are the proud parents of a baby girl. Mr. and Mrs. Warren Bridge are back from their vacation trip east and west.

   Sympathy is extended to Doyle Underhill and two sons in the loss of his wife who passed away in Milwaukee last week.

   Hackensack men who recently enlisted in the armed forces are William Park and Willard Flacksbarth, US Air Force, and Kenneth Wallin, US Army.

March 23, 1951

   A total of 79.9 inches of snow has fallen this winter. Almost half of that came just in the last month.

   A Hackensack feller named Pete, once said of the high cost of meat: “Even pigs are so high, that I think bye and bye, they’ll put a price on the squeak”.

   Jimmy Coleman arrived at his parents’ home in Brevik to spend a few weeks.

50 Years Ago

March 11, 1976

   Arrowhead Communications Corporation has announced that REA has approved loan funds for a new one-party telephone system for the Bena area.

   Rory Sherman is recovering at home following a gun accident two weeks ago while he was in the woods near Federal Dam.

   Gilbert Norman passed away Tuesday after just returning from a vacation in Hawaii. He and his wife operated Lakeview Camp on Mule and Blackwater lakes for many years.

 25 Years Ago

March 13, 2001 

   Wesley Menton died February 22. He was born in 1922 in Remer to Ebenezer and Hazel (Bedbury) Menton. He was a WWII Army Air Corps veteran. He was a musician and played in several bands. He was presently employed as a special education school bus driver.

   Rosalin “Posy” Sewell died February 20th . She was born July 10, 1916, to Harry and Ethelyn (Thyle) Pfiffner. She married Kenton Sewell in 1925, and they operated a laundromat and service laundry in Pine River for 18 years. She retired in 1978 and spent summers on Mule Lake in the Pfiffner cabin which the family had since the 1920s.
