  Information for 100, 75, 50 and 25  year news briefs was researched and gathered by Renee Geving and Cec McKeig from Cass County newspaper archives at the Cass County Historical Society.    

100 Years Ago

Jan. 28, 1926

   Mary Ann Yochum, wife of Anton, died at the family home in Kego after being seriously ill for several days. She is survived by her husband and seven children.

   Three sleigh loads of young people from the community center at Ah Gwah Ching visited Walker Tuesday evening and brought to mind what some of the elders used to call “High Old Times.”

   I alwus did like thet verse in thee Good Book which reads sumthin’ like this: “Th’ milk uf human kindness is far reachin’ fer it getteth your enemy’s goat.”

 75 Years Ago

Jan. 21, 1950

   There will be a skating party and wiener roast Saturday evening at the Skating Rink in Hackensack for the young people of the “Youth Center.” There will also be games in the schoolhouse for those not wishing to skate.

   Mabel Louise Rogers of Remer is leaving for Washington, D.C. where she will work as a stenographer in the Navy Department.

   George Paquin was taken to Deer River hospital by Bob Henshaw and had five stitches in his leg. He cut it while he was cutting the stock silage at Boy Lake.

50 Years Ago

Jan. 25, 1976

   George and Charles Williams, proprietors of the Williams Service Station, celebrated their first year of business in Remer with a smorgasbord on New Year’s Eve.

   On Saturday evening, the No Name Riders Snowmobile group of 2- rode the trails to Hackensack to enjoy dinner at the Owl’s Nest. 

   The Longville Snowmobile Club met Wednesday evening at the David Felton home with 6 members present.

Jan. 23, 2001 

   The 14th Annual Mid-Minnesota 150 Sled Dog Race finishes Saturday in Remer. Pro and Trophy contestants will race from Aitkin to Outing for a two-hour layover, before running the final leg into Remer.

   Billing the 119 residents of Federal Dam for the new sewer system will be easier for Lake Country Power members thanks to the computer that Lake Country Power donated to Federal Dam.

   Samuel George Jordan, 9 lbs. 1oz. was born to Chad and Marian Jordan and big brother Benjamin on January 9th. Grandparents are Butch and Carol Jordan of Longville and Don Salwei of SD and Louise Salwei of Longville.
