Gwendolyn Estelle Welk Workman, 85, passed away peacefully on September 22, 2025, in Plano, Texas, surrounded by her loving family.
Born on September 9, 1940, in Walker, Minnesota, Gwen was raised in the close-knit community of Brevik by her parents, John and Estelle Welk. She grew up alongside her seven siblings—John, Marilyn, Richard, Charlotte, Judy, Ronald, and Donald—in a rural settlement deeply rooted in Scandinavian heritage. The rhythms of life in Brevik were shaped by the traditions of Norwegian and German immigrants who farmed the land, fished the lakes, and lived simply and closely with nature. This idyllic upbringing would later inspire Gwen’s creative spirit and become the foundation for her beloved children’s books featuring Magnus the Troll and his whimsical adventures.
Gwen resided in Longville, Minnesota, where she raised her family and became an active member of the community. Her dedication to family and community remained a constant throughout her life.
In 1985, Gwen moved to Texas where she began a new chapter that would leave a lasting legacy. For 37 years she owned and operated The Wooden Spoon—a small shop that blossomed into much more than a retail space. Specializing in Scandinavian products, The Wooden Spoon became a cherished gathering place where culture was celebrated and friendships were forged. Gwen infused every corner of her store with warmth and hospitality. She was known for her delicious lefse, cookies and generous hugs—so much so that her business cards proudly declared a “license to hug.” Her shop was a labor of love that reflected her deep appreciation for heritage and human connection.
In addition to being a devoted entrepreneur and writer, Gwen was a woman of deep faith. A faithful Lutheran and fervent prayer warrior, she found strength and joy in her relationship with Jesus Christ. Her spiritual devotion was evident in every aspect of her life and brought comfort to those around her.
Gwen’s greatest joy came from spending time with her family and friends. She treasured each moment shared with loved ones and nurtured meaningful relationships throughout her life.
She is lovingly remembered by her former husband James Workman; daughter-in-law Susan Workman; son Stuart Workman (Jacqueline); daughter Shelly Shaffer (Andrew); grandchildren Brandon Workman (Jodie), Evan Workman (Paulina), Nicholas Workman (Kelsey), Benjamin Shaffer (Zoe), Samuel Shaffer, and great granddaughter, Brinlee Workman. Gwen was preceded in death by her son James Workman.
Gwen claimed the promises of her baptism with peace and grace. Her legacy lives on through the stories she told, the community she built, and the love she gave so freely.
In Lieu of flowers, memorials preferred in memory of Gwen can be made to her favorite charities, St. Jude’s Foundation, the Kidney Foundation or Prestonwood Pregnancy Center located in Dallas, TX.
May her memory bring comfort to all who knew her.
There will be two funerals for Gwen.
