Author Heidi Adelsman Speaks in Hackensack Sept. 4

The Cass County Chapter of the Izaak Walton League and the Justice Ministry Team of Union Congregational Church invite you to a presentation by Heidi Adelsman, an award-winning Minnesota author, on Thursday, September 4. The presentation will begin at 7 PM at Union Church, 410 Lake Ave E, Hackensack. Heidi is a VA nurse in the Twin Cities, a community historian and public health advocate who writes for local and regional publications on the history of desegregation in housing and education, on community public health issues and in an anthology on transracial adoption called Outsiders Within.

She is currently finishing a novel, “Highway Women”. Heidi will discuss her research and knowledge of health issues and herbicide use along roads and highways in Minnesota. When she reads portions of her novel you will meet Shay, a nursing student whose family lives and works along highways. Haunted by her family’s history of unexplained disease, early death and her own birth defect, she turns to her mother, a VA nurse, who is frustratingly tight lipped, refusing to talk about the past. Desperate, Shay takes matters into her own hands, but as she begins to draw connections between a deadly chemical weed control used in the construction and maintenance of highways, she uncovers more than secrets that tear her family and community apart. Now Shay must decide if the answers she seeks are worth the risk of further shattering her own already devastated family.

After the presentation there will be a Q and A time to discuss her book, and the issues raised.
