Richard Louis Engen, known to family and friends as “Dick,” passed away peacefully on October 19, 2025, at the age of 85.
Born on September 15, 1940, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Dick was the son of Oscar (Mike) and Jeanette Engen. He graduated from Patrick Henry High School in 1957. In 1963, he married, Patricia (Andrews), and together they built a full and wonderful life over 62 years of marriage.
In 1968, Dick and Patty moved north to Remer, Minnesota, where they founded Remer Plumbing and Heating, which they owned and operated for many years. Dick took great pride in his work, his community, and the friendships he made through his business.
Dick loved the outdoors — hunting, fishing, and golfing were lifelong passions. He was also a skilled builder and woodworker, having built several of his family’s homes and crafted countless woodworking projects for those he loved. His creativity, generosity, and craftsmanship will be fondly remembered by all who were lucky enough to receive one of his creations.
Those who knew Dick will remember his sharp wit and great sense of humor — he loved to laugh and had a natural ability to bring fun and lightness to any situation. He enjoyed life fully and found joy in simple moments and in the company of family and friends.
He was fiercely independent and lived life on his own terms, guided by a strong sense of integrity, practicality, and self-reliance — qualities that inspired everyone who knew him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar and Jeanette Engen, and his brother, Bruce Engen.
Dick is survived by his wife, Patricia; daughter Robin Lucas (Mike); sons Mike Engen (Sue) and Greg Engen (Tonja); brothers Dean Engen (Debra) and Howard Engen (Vel); and grandchildren Erin, Ryan, Mychal Lynn, Caitlin, Nick, Zach, Ben, and Olivia. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and countless friends who were like family.
Dick will be remembered for his work ethic, his humor, his independence, his love of family, and his deep appreciation for the simple joys of life.
