   The Pine Mountaineer Senior Citizens Club in Backus, also commonly known as the Backus Senior Center has been in existence since 1973 when its first club meeting was held at Kay’s Cafe in Backus. 

   The Senior Center is a 501(c)(3) Non-Profit organization whose membership is comprised of people that are Fifty-Five+ years young. Many of the members provide volunteer support to maintain the facility and operations that provide a very low-cost breakfast and lunch every Wednesday to anyone, regardless of age. Breakfast consists of freshly baked four-ounce caramel and cinnamon rolls, and breakfast sandwiches. The lunch is a well-balanced full meal that is prepared in our own commercial kitchen, with freshly baked pie for dessert.  In addition, the Senior Center hosts two card classes that are held on the last two Mondays of each month.  These classes provide the equipment, supplies and instruction to develop a variety of cards (I.e. greeting cards, etc.). There is a small fee to help cover costs of materials and there is card creation supplies available for sale. All ages are welcome to take part in the classes.

   The Senior Center exists to help unite the community through its gatherings, fellowship, good food, and its relationship with the Pine River-Backus Family Center’s CommUnity Meals Project. This project is supported by the Senior Center’s commercial kitchen, where all the CommUnity meals are prepared and distributed freely every Thursday afternoon from the Senior Center, and every Monday from a Pine River location. Together we enhance community relationships through wholesome free take-out hot meals.

   Please come and join us on a Wednesday to partake of our wonderful food. Everyone is welcome, regardless of age! We also welcome anyone that wishes to become a member.  Members benefit from the use of the facility for gatherings, etc. We also welcome those that wish to volunteer some of their free time to help in meal preparation and café type operations.
