Thorburn (Ahrndt, Lien, nee Bednarski), Carole

b. Apr. 16, 1977 d. Nov. 16, 2025

Carole, age 97, quietly departed this world one week after suffering a hip fracture. As she aged into her 90’s, she thought about what she wanted to say and wrote her own obit. Here are her words:

“I have been forever grateful for the life I’ve had. I leave behind my pride and joy, much loved daughter, Shelley, and Shelley’s husband Tim, whose love and friendship I valued. To the Ahrndt and the Thorburn families – thanks for enriching my life and for making me a part of yours. To my grandchildren – what wonderful memories you have given me. Step-children by definition but not “step” in my heart. To Carole Sue – another who has enriched my life. Thank you for your love and loyalty. To Jade – how fondly I remember and looked forward to your special summer visits. To Jeff – thanks for all your willing help. To Joleen, whose visits and talks I treasured. In my marriages, my career and with life in general, I’ve appreciated the strong friendships I had, the loyal students I taught (especially those who honored my request to reunite as ADULTS - an absolute highlight in my life), and the relatives I’ve enjoyed. My nieces, nephews and cousins have all contributed to my happy life. Thanks again for the memories. They have been revisited many times over the years. And – who knows? Watch for the butterfly in your garden – it could be me!”

Carole loved flowers, dogs, music, singing, dancing, smiling, laughing, teaching, playing bridge with her Longville friends, reading, warm sunshine and being kind and compassionate to all. Her curiosity and desire to learn never stopped. Carole’s example of how to live with integrity and joy has rippled out to positively touch so many. We are better for having known her.

Special thanks to the wonderful staff at May Creek Assisted Living for their compassionate care during the last 9 months. Overwhelming thanks to all the staff at St. Joe’s Hospital in Brainerd, whose outstanding skilled, tender care of her at the end of her life was extraordinarily impressive and comforting. Rest easy now, Mom. Well done.

At Mom’s request, no services will be held. Carole’s care has been entrusted to Northern Peace Funeral Home of Walker, MN.  Online condolences for the family may be left at www.northernpeace.com
