   The Hackensack Countryside Coop is in desperate need of volunteer board members in order for the store to survive. The Coop, a buyer’s club, has been serving the community for almost 50 years.  Providing healthy food choices at affordable prices for its members, donating its products for events sponsored by local organizations, and passing on its profits to five area food shelves, supports its presence as an invaluable asset to this area. At this point, operating with only five active directors, is not a viable option. Hiring staff would only add to the likelihood of the coop’s demise, and eliminate the purpose for which it was intended.

   The BOTTOM LINE is that directors are needed ASAP. Volunteers for director need to be willing to attend one board meeting per month (can be remote), perform lead duties when the store is open, manage a major function (i.e. inventory management, ordering, and receiving products), and be comfortable with using a computer.    A willingness to learn, taking ownership in the coop’s mission, and committing the time necessary, are the key ingredients to the success of the coop’s continuation.

   In conclusion, being a coop board member, is a great way to volunteer, meet people, contribute to the community, learn new skills, and MOST importantly, keep the coop contributing to the community.
