Board Chair Marc Ruyak began the regular meeting held Wednesday, June 11 by highlighting donations from the following: Emily Firemen’s Relief Association donated $500 to the Trap Team; $50 from Mike Knapp for the Trap Team and $100 for the Wrestling Team from First National Bank.

Janessa Green, elementary principal, then shared her monthly report with a wrap-up of the year. Green mentioned elementary staff finished the first half of LETRS ( Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling) training and are planning on partnering with staff at Walker-Hackensack-Akley School for implementation training. Therefore, Green stated she is currently working on a contract to assist in the payment of the training.

Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports numbers in the elementary saw a huge decrease throughout the 2024-2025 school year. Green stated total majors given during this school year were 160, while 467 were given out during last year. Minors given out during the past year were down to 738 from 1,119 given during the prior year. Overall Green feels the policies staff has implemented during the 2024-2025 school year is working well with student behaviors. Next on Green’s agenda is to get all students at the district goals for reading and math and with implementation of the new LETRS program she feels staff will be able to accomplish that goal.

Lori Backlund with Arrowhead Regional Computing Consortium, shared updated information regarding the budget. Backlund stated the current fiscal year budget is looking at coming in flat, while the 2025-2026 fiscal year is looking at a deficit of approximately $264,000. This estimate is with some quick configurations after the special legislative session held, therefore, Backlund recommended the board revisit the budget in August after everything settles down. With the board needing to approve a budget before the end of the current fiscal year a motion was made to approve the proposed budget and approved unanimously.

   In other Board action:

   • Heard an update from Mary Yakibchuk, High School Principal/Superintendent.

   • Ruyak gave an update regarding NREM negotiations and stated they were being placed on pause until fall when the board could get a better understanding of the fiscal year budget.

   • Approved various agreements and second reading policies.

   • Approved unpaid vacation for Ken Grabinski, bus driver, for the following dates: Mar. 9 - 13, 2026.

   • Accepted the resignation of Carter McLaughlin, activities director, effective June 30.

   • Approved the hire of Karlys Gries as elementary special education teacher and Brittany McClellan as high school leadership advisor.

The board has scheduled the following meetings: the regular meeting, Wed., July 9 at 5:30 p.m. and a work session, Wed., July 23 at 5:30 p.m. All meetings are held at Northland High School.
