National Loon Center breaks ground in Crosslake

Crosslake – The National Loon Center is officially breaking ground in Crosslake, marking a major milestone for a project that began as a visionary idea just ten years ago. Community leaders, conservationists and public officials will gather to celebrate the launch of this world-class facility dedicated to loon preservation, environmental education and sustainable tourism.

Localed on the shores of Cross Lake in the heart of Minnesota’s lake country, the National Loon Center will serve as a hub for research, education and recreation. The center aims to inspire stewardship of freshwater ecosystems and foster a deeper appreciation for one of Minnesota’s most iconic species–the common loon.

“This is more than a building–it’s a bold commitment to protecting our natural heritage and engaging future generations,” said Jon Mobeck, Executive Director of the National Loon Center. “We’re thrilled to see this dream take flight.”

The groundbreaking ceremony represents years of collaboration among local, state and national partners. With sustainanility and innovation at its core, the center will feature interactive exhibits, lake access for research and education programs and habitat restoration efforts to ensure loons continue to thrive.

Community members are invited to attend the public celebration on Friday, June 20, 2025 at 3 p.m., for the groundbreaking with special guest speakers, and to visit The Nest to learn more!
