Waiting well: Finding Holy moments in the midst of Advent

As the season of Advent unfolds, our homes, calendars, and hearts all begin to lean gently toward Christmas. Advent is, at its core, a season of waiting—an invitation to slow down, pay attention, and prepare room for Christ. Yet in a world that moves quickly and demands much, how do families of faith create small moments each day to pause and remember what (and Who) we’re waiting for?

This question was posed recently to members of Sacred Heart and St. Agnes, who generously shared the simple, meaningful practices that help them stay grounded in prayer during Advent. What emerged was a beautiful tapestry of everyday faithfulness—reminders that preparing for Christ does not require grand gestures, only open hearts.

One parishioner described the power of keeping Scripture close at hand: “We keep our Bible and daily readings right by our chairs. It helps us pause and give praise throughout the day.” Others said they place a rosary or crucifix above the bed as a nighttime reminder to end the day in prayer. One favorite verse—“Be still and know that I am God”—was stenciled onto the floor of a backyard shed, turning an ordinary space into a sacred pause.

Many spoke about weaving prayer naturally into the rhythm of the day. Some pray the rosary while driving or walking. Several families say bedtime prayers with their children, offering gratitude for the day and asking God to watch over their home through the night. One couple begins every morning together with a simple offering: “Lord, we give this day to You.” Another parishioner shared, “When I become annoyed in public, I pause and say a prayer for the person instead. I ask God to help them through their day—and ask the angels to give them a warm hug.”

Others connect with Scripture through programs like Bible in a Year with Fr. Mike Schmitz, or through evening prayer routines that end the day in peace. Still others emphasized conversational prayer—talking with God throughout ordinary moments, whether while cooking, folding laundry, or driving to work.

Across all the suggestions, one theme was unmistakable: Advent becomes richer when faith is practiced not only in church but in the quiet, unglamorous corners of daily life. Prayer before meals, a quick Hail Mary when someone needs it, conversations about saints, and small reminders placed around the home—all of these shape the heart over time.

Families also highlighted the importance of praying together: parents praying over their children, spouses ending the day in prayer, or simply keeping lines of faith-filled conversation open. These little practices help cultivate a home where Christ is welcomed not only at Christmas, but every day.

This Advent, perhaps the best way to prepare for Christ is by embracing the small pauses—those gentle moments that remind us to slow down, breathe, and remember God’s nearness. Whether it’s a whispered prayer, a verse taped to the mirror, or a family blessing before bed, each act draws us closer to the heart of the season.

In our waiting, we discover that Christ is already here—quietly, faithfully, in the midst of our ordinary days.

May your Advent be blessed with peace, prayer, and holy moments.”
