Cass County receives 120 acres benefitting public

Walker, MN - A valuable stretch of forestland in Cass County has been permanently protected and returned to public ownership, expanding opportunities for habitat protection, recreation, and sustainable forestry.

The 120-acre tract was once managed as part of PotlatchDeltic’s working forest. In 2020, The Conservation Fund purchased 72,000 acres of Potlatch land to ensure long term conservation. Northern Waters Land Trust later acquired 120 acres using state Outdoor Heritage Funds and has now transferred it to Cass County, where it will remain protected and publicly accessible for generations to come.

“This land holds special meaning for me,” said Mark Gossman, Cass County Land Commissioner. “Earlier in my career, I managed this very forest when it was privately owned by Potlatch. To now oversee it as county land is a full circle moment. We look forward to continuing thoughtful management that supports wildlife, public use, and strong forest health.”

Annie Knight, Executive Director of Northern Waters Land Trust, emphasized the broader impact. “This project is a powerful example of public and nonprofit partners working together to protect land and water. Cass County has a deep legacy of conservation, and this transfer ensures that legacy will continue well into the future.”

The Cass County acquisition is part of the Minnesota Heritage Forest project, a collaborative effort between Northern Waters Land Trust and The Conservation Fund to protect nearly 8,200 acres of forestland in northern Minnesota. The project was made possible by a $10.2 million appropriation from the Outdoor Heritage Fund, as recommended by the Lessard Sams Outdoor Heritage Council and approved by the Minnesota Legislature.
