Help Save a Piece of Hackensack History

Join us on Wednesday, August 20, from 5 PM-6 PM., for a special Benefit Dinner at the Union Congregational Church supporting the Hackensack Lending Library Restoration Project that is currently bringing back an important piece of history. All profits from the freewill donations proceeds from this evening of community, conversation, and comfort food will go toward the restoration of the beloved Hackensack Lending Library, a log structure that’s stood since 1936.

The Hackensack Lending Library isn’t just a building; it’s a local treasure. One of only two historic buildings in town, it has served as a welcoming space for book lovers of all ages for almost three decades. Thanks to the dedicated efforts of volunteers, this little log library, with its charming “no library card needed” philosophy, has become a symbol of community spirit and generosity.

But by 2021, it became apparent that if restoration efforts didn’t begin soon, this unique building could literally implode within a decade. That wasn’t an option for Board Chair Maggie McGill and the many volunteers who see the library not only as a building, but as a reflection of Hackensack’s heart. They rallied support, met with Mayor Bill Kennedy and restoration experts, and launched what would become a mission to bring the library back to life.

In 2023, after two years of arduous and time-consuming work of researching the building’s history and adhering to the requirements of registering historical sites, their efforts were honored when the Hackensack Lending Library was officially added to the National Register of Historic Places. This is a major milestone that affirms its value, charm, and significance.

Now deep into Phase 1 of the restoration, work is underway to sandblast and refinish the logs, replace rotted wood, restore windows and screens, refinish the floors, install a custom screen door, and add a basement sump pump. Phase 2 will include the addition of a furnace and a handicap-accessible ramp, which are improvements that will help ensure the library remains welcoming and functional for years to come.

All of this requires funding, and that’s where you come in.

Union Congregational Church is honored to host this fundraiser on Wednesday, August 20 from 5 to 6 p.m. in support of the Hackensack Lending Library, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. You’ll be treated to a delicious home-cooked meal prepared by UCC’s own Tammy Lindberg, featuring scalloped potatoes with ham, green beans, buns and homemade desserts. The kind of comfort food that warms the heart and fuels a cause.

This is more than just a meal. It’s a way to show that we care about preserving the legacy of Hackensack for future generations. As Maggie McGill so perfectly puts it, “Find a book, take it home, love it, and return it if you remember.” That’s the spirit of the Hackensack Lending Library – casual, caring, and built on trust. Now it’s time to return the favor.
