Roger was born June 11, 1939 in Minneapolis, Minnesota to Francis Calvin and Gladys (Thompson) Googins. He grew up in southwest Minneapolis, graduating from Southwest High School. Following high school he attended St. Cloud State, graduating with a Bachelors Degree in Education.
Roger and Mary Kay Mart were married on January 17, 1970 and lived in Minneapolis until retirement.
Roger continued his education while teaching, receiving his Masters Degree from St. Thomas. He taught high school English and SLD students at several schools within the twin cities area including Bryant Junior High School and Southwest High School. Known as "Mr. G." to his students, Roger's teaching career spanned 31 years of caring and investing in the lives of many young people. Following retirement he and Mary Kay have enjoyed their home on Woman Lake near Longville as well as enjoying winters in Florida and many travelling adventures throughout their life. Roger was a member of Salem Lutheran Church in Longville.
Roger was a true sportsman, an avid deer and elk hunter, and never missed an opportunity to go fishing with friends in Canada or canoeing in the boundary waters. He also looked forward to time spent on the golf course, tennis court, or tinkering in his wood shop. Roger was also a wonderfully talented writer. In his younger days he was a star hockey player, and was inducted into the St. Cloud State Hockey Hall of Fame.
Roger will be remembered for his dry, quick wit, and his spontaneous, fun loving, and positive approach to living life. He will be greatly missed by the many that were privileged to be part of his life.
Roger is survived by his wife Mary Kay, niece Julie Googins, nephew Brian Googins, aunts, many cousins, and a multitude of friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Gary Googins.
Please join Roger's family in celebrating his life on June 1, 2012 at the Ridgewood Golf Course in Longville. A buffet lunch will be served from 11:00 -3:00 and a special time of sharing will begin at 1:30. The Dennis Funeral Home of Longville assisted the family in making arrangements.
