John Raymond Blais, 66, of Longville, passed away Saturday, December 17, 2011 at Golden Living Center in Walker, Minn.

John was born October 1, 1945 in Grand Rapids, Minn., to Anthony and Lucienne (Pouliot) Blais. He grew up and attended school in Remer, graduating from Remer High School in 1963. Following high school he went to St. John's University, and in 1966 joined Northwest Airlines. In 1970 he was drafted in the US Army and then returned to Northwest following his military service. John flew as a pilot for 38 years, having one of the top distinctions of most hours logged in piloting a 747 in the history of Northwest Airlines. His main flight was to Tokyo, but he flew worldwide. He proudly volunteered to serve as main pilot on one the first flights of troops to Iraq.

John retired in 2004 and moved "north" to Longville where he enjoyed hunting and fishing during his retirement years. He also continued to fly his own plane and always looked forward to his trips to his cabin in Canada. He was a member, and served on the board of the Minnesota Deer Hunters Association. John will be remembered as a very independent, and intelligent man who always had time to share his lifetime of experiences over coffee, and with his good friends.

John is survived by two sister-in-laws Kay Blais and Marilyn Blais, nephews Mark (Giana) Blais. Scott (Leslie) Blais, David (Mindy) Blais, John (Tobi) Blais, Niece Sue (Rod) Klaus, and good friends Alan Weaver and Rosalie Letson.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers Bob and Phillip Blais.

Memorial Services will be held Wednesday, December 21, 2011 at 11:00 A.M. at St. Edwards Catholic Church with Father Joseph Sirba officiating. There will be a gathering for family and friends one hour prior to the service. Military Honors will be provided by the Longville VFW Post #772 prior to a private family inurnment at Riverside Cemetery. Lunch will be served at Patrick's Fine Dining in Longville immediately following the service.
