In its 21st year, the US Army Corps of Engineers Kids Fishing Derby at Leech Lake Recreation Area drew one of its largest crowds yet. A total of 192 kids registered for the free contest, which took place below the dam Saturday July 16. The hot temps and high humidity didn't discourage the participant's one bit as they showcased their angling skills.

Local merchants provided hot dogs, chips, soda and ice cream for the kids and their families, as well as bait and many great prizes.[[In-content Ad]]

Throughout the day staff and volunteers stressed the importance of water safety and proper catch-and-release techniques with help from the Cass County Sheriff's Boat & Water Safety Division. "Bobber" the water safety dog was on hand as well to meet and greet the participants. Lakeland Television was on site doing a story on the derby for an upcoming news broadcast. Fish of all types were reeled in during the hour long contest including Rock Bass, Northern Pike, and Perch.

0-5 Age Group - first place, Maya Lego, Lake Bronson; second place, Gavin Feltus, Deer River; third place, Ava Hebr, Bovey

6-11 Age Group - First place, Anayah Matthews, Bena; second place, Desiree Urbina, Minneapolis; thir place, Liberty Blaine, Grand Rapids

12-16 Age Glass - First place, Austin Steere, Grand Rapids; sedonc place, Troy Finn, Bena; third place, Dustin Tonga, Federal Dam
