Donald was born at Litchfield, Minnesota to Evald and Bertha Nelson. He enlisted in the Army in 1948 and served a tour in Korea. Upon discharge in 1952 Don moved to Remer, Minnesota where he ran several businesses. He later moved to Cohasset where he owned and operated Quality Wild Rice since 1989. Don loved to fish and travel.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers. Clefton and Wesley, and a sister, Marian.
He is survived by Kathy, his wife of 29 years; seven children, John (Renae) Kovall of Claremore, Oklahoma, David (Diane) Kovall of Bemidji, Minnesota, Dean (Elizabeth) Nelson of Superior, Wisconsin, Kris (Keith) Mathiason of Cohasset, Darcie (Adam) Gundry of Superior, Juston Whirley of Grand Rapids, and Jesse Whirley of Cohasset; two brothers, James Nelson of Moab, Utah and Bruce Nelson of Colorado Springs, Colo.; three sisters, Bev Norgard of Brainerd, Minnesota, Lorraine (Paul) Mix of Remer, and Ruth Ann (Sheldon) Gustafson of Forest Lake, Minnesota; seven grandchildren; and one great grandchild.
A Memorial Service was held at 11 a.m., on Friday March 18, at St. Andrew's Lutheran Church, in Grand Rapids. Spring burial will be in Wildwood Cemetery, Cohasset.
