Kangas elected Cass County Board Chair; Gaalswyk Vice Chair

WALKER - Cass County commissioners opened their first 2014 meeting by electing Bob Kangas chair and Neal Gaalswyk vice chair. They reviewed four applications from legal firms wanting to succeed contract attorney Tom Fitzpatrick as the county's legal counsel for labor negotiation and legal labor issues.

Sheriff's Department responds to weekend incidents

Cass County Sheriff Tom Burch reports that on 9-14-2013 at approximately 01:56 AM the Cass County Sheriff's Office received a report of a motor vehicle accident with injuries on County Rd 71 in Hiram Twp, on the west side of Ten Mile Lake

Public hearing planned to discuss proposed Cass sewer system regulation

WALKER - Cass County will conduct a public hearing before the planning commission at 11 a.m. Feb. 10 at the land department building in Backus on proposed changes to the county's individual sewer system regulations.

Cass Capital Improvement Plan public hearing planned

BACKUS - Cass County commissioners will review a preliminary draft April 1 and hold a public hearing May 6 at regular 9 a.m. board meetings at the courthouse in Walker on an updated capital improvement plan.

County inmate population on the rise

BACKUS - Chief Sheriff's Deputy Erick Hoglund and Lt. Joel Norenberg informed Cass County commissioners Tuesday about rising jail inmate populations and challenges to find housing for prisoners.

Sheriff's Annual Report shows improved response times, scams and fraud rising

WALKER - Sheriff Tom Burch noted in his annual report to the county board that deputies cut average response time to calls from 15 minutes to 9.9 in 2013, despite a 5.5 percent rise in the number of calls for service.

Cass County townships' state gas tax funds up from last year

WALKER - Cass County townships will share $460,870 in gas tax money this year, up $15,611 from last year. This is the first year under a new state law. Previously, each township had to levy locally a minimum amount to qualify for the state gas tax.

Cass County foreclosures rise slightly in 2013

WALKER - Cass County property foreclosures were up slightly in 2013 from 2012, but remain well below numbers in 2011 and 2010.

Cass County tax forfeited property sale price is current market value

BACKUS - Pillager Mayor Gary Greenheck appealed unsuccessfully to the Cass County Board Tuesday. He asked permission for the city to buy 30 tax forfeited lots in the Crossing development in that city for unpaid taxes rather than market value.
