Duck stamps on the wane?

As my duck hunting partner cut the motor and nosed the boat into shore, we both looked up to see a uniformed man casually walking down to meet us. It was late morning, long after many hunters had abandoned the cause, and had left the lake. Being within a National …

"Choot 'em, Lizabeth"

There is a program on television about a bunch of crazy Cajuns hunting alligators in Louisiana. It is not very realistic, but young and old find it entertaining. One of the most commonly used lines in the show is, "Shoot him, Elizabeth!" This is always uttered when Troy has an …

DNR urges caution with fires; burning permits now required

Winter is usually a time of low fire danger in Minnesota, but this winter is different, with snow drought in most of the state. Fuels such as grasses and brush, which are usually covered with snow, are freeze-dried and available to burn this winter. Because of these conditions, the Minnesota …

A look back, and a look forward

I doubt that there is a time or season that brings more nostalgia and reflection than the Christmas-to-New Year holiday period. There is no other time when most of us are more likely to be with our extended families, no other time when we are more likely to recall more …

Minnesota ready to take over wolf management

As the Minnesota Senate Delegation representing Northern Minnesota, we want to praise the federal government's removal of grey wolves from the Endangered Species List. We have supported the removal because it is clear the wolf population in Minnesota has sufficiently recovered and no longer needs federal protection. In addition, we …

Transitions

I knew my wife and I would have some adjustments in our move to the wilderness, but never thought much about how it would affect the dogs. I thought having wide open spaces to run would be great for them. It has been good in many ways, but there has …

Minnesota's Wolf Management Plan to take effect Jan. 27

Minnesota's population of wolves will transition from federal protection to state management by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) on Jan. 27, bringing with that transition a number of law changes. Minnesota's Wolf Management Plan will protect wolves and monitor their population, but also give owners of livestock and …

Attack of the Coyotes

When we decorated the living room in our new house, being a guy, naturally I did not have much say in the decor. Most guy's idea of decorations are moose mounts and duck pictures. Women tend more to candles and flowers. It usually works out better if the woman of …

DNR releases proposal for wolf harvest season this fall

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is proposing an inaugural gray wolf hunting and trapping season this fall that calls for a conservative harvest quota of 400 animals. Wolf research indicates Minnesota's wolf population could sustain a higher quota, but DNR officials say they are taking a measured approach …
