Cass board establishes emergency fund

BACKUS - Cass County Board voted Tuesday to adopt budget committee recommendations to cut enough items from the proposed 2015 budget to allow for a $198,651 contingency fund to handle emergencies.

Foreclosures fall throughout Cass County

BACKUS - Assessor Mark Peterson reported Cass County foreclosures dropped significantly in the third quarter this year. In 2013, there were 31 third quarter foreclosures. That dropped to 21 this year, with the largest decline shown in non-homesteaded residential properties (vacation homes).

Plans made to prepare for Cass County retirements

WALKER - Cass County Board voted Tuesday to form a partnership with Leech Lake Reservation and the city of Cass Lake to seek federal Environmental Protection Agency money to do a Countywide Brownfields Assessment.

Cass Board makes final payment for road and trail improvements

WALKER - Cass County Board approved final payment for 2014 road rebuilding and paving on County Road 143 and a recreational trail along County State Aid Highway 75 near Cass Lake. That project ran $18,000 under bid price.

Agreement sought between Longville, Cass County

BACKUS - County Engineer David Enblom obtained county board approval Tuesday to make a new agreement with the city of Longville to bid the city's sanitary sewer project at the same time as a county highway project there for work this summer.

BACKUS - Cass County Board approved contracts with two union bargaining units Tuesday, granting 2.5 percent base raises Jan. 1, 2015, and again Jan. 1, 2016.

Cass board will permit demonstrations on courthouse lawn

BACKUS - Cass County commissioners Tuesday reaffirmed their policy to permit people to demonstrate in behalf of a cause on the courthouse lawn as long as demonstrators do not interfere with people doing business at the courthouse or become unruly.
