   Join Cass County Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) on September 12 from 10 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. for a Woodland Tour on a 40-acre tract just north of Outing where attendees can experience what thoughtful, long term woodland management looks like on the ground. This property offers a rare opportunity to walk through six distinct forest ecosystems in a single section, each intentionally shaped to support wildlife, recreation, and water quality.

   A well-designed cross-country ski trail system winds through the property, providing year-round access for hiking and winter recreation. The trails were carefully planned to follow natural contours, minimize erosion, and connect key habitat areas. Routine maintenance such as mowing, brushing, and occasional resurfacing keeps them in good condition while allowing the surrounding forest to thrive.

   The property also showcases several pine plantations at different stages of growth. These areas highlight how active management, including thinning and regeneration, can create a mix of age classes that improve forest health and resilience over time.

Woodland management specialists from the American Bird Conservancy will also discuss strategies private landowners can use to manage their woods for birds while creating habitat that benefits other wildlife and game species.

You’ll also have time to talk with forestry professionals and learn practical steps you can take to improve and manage your own woods.
