100 Years Ago

September 16, 1926

   The Longville fair was held Saturday in spite of the rain. Nyvall’s hall was used for the purpose. Exhibits and attendance were large.

   Glenn Witham, efficient employee of the Bragg Hardware store, is off duty this week nursing an infected hand.

   I.M. Walker is in Wabedo as he expects to do some grading here next week.

 75 Years Ago

September 21, 1951

   The newly remodeled Zion Lutheran church at Boy River was dedicated on September 30th. The people of Boy River organized this congregation on December 14, 1919.

   Earl Rust of Illinois purchased a Lazy Ike from Joe Slavik, who owns Safe Harbor resort at Brevik. He went out on the lake and hooked a big one, which snapped his line and got away. Rust went out again and noticed a large fish jumping out of the water several times that day. That evening Joe was docking his boats when he noticed a big Northern resting nearby. He netted the fish and found that it was his guest’s fish, complete with the Lazy Ike in its mouth.

   Cass County feller named Dobbin, through the northern Jack Pines has been bobbin’. He’s so anxious for spring, that he can’t do a thing until after he’s seen the first robin.

50 Years Ago

September 9, 1976

  A major forest fire was reported last Friday in the Chippewa National Forest near Moccasin Lake, south of Whipholt, that burned 82 acres. There were high winds of 30 mph, gusting to 40 mph.

   Forty-three graduates of the old Hackensack High School were at a recent class reunion which was held for the vintage era of 1915 to 1922.

   Tom and Bob Slagle of New Rockford, ND spent the Labor Day weekend with their parents, the Glenn Slagles.

25 Years Ago

September 18, 2001 

   Ernest Sterns died September 12th. He was born January 1, 1910, at Grand Rapids. He attended college in Bemidji, was in the CCCs, and Sgt. In the Army where he was a cook. He farmed in the Boy River for most of his life. He is buried at Zion Lutheran Island cemetery in Boy River.

   Freshman Dylan Stallings of Longville is a member of the Central Lakes College Raiders football team. 

   A thousand miles from New York and Washington, the horrific terrorist attack on America Tuesday directly and indirectly touched the lives of every person in our county.
