Roald Gene Tormondsen

b. July 14, 1928 d. Nov. 22, 2025


   Roald Gene Tormondsen, age 97, of Remer, MN, passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 22, 2025 at St. Lukes Hospital in Duluth with his family by his side.  He was born on Saturday, July 14, 1928 in Tofte, MN, the son of Christopher and Mathilda (Smith) Tormondsen.  

   Roald grew up and attended the Grand Marais High School. He graduated in 1946 and enlisted in the United States Army where he served from 1947 to 1951. 

Following his honorable discharge from the service he took a position with Duluth Mesabi & Iron Range Railroad working in the car shop. Roald left the railroad and was a barber at the Lakeside Barber Shop for ten years before he returned to the DM&IR as a car inspector. He was a 32-degree Mason, member of the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, a life member of the American Legion Duluth Post #28, an Aad Shriner for 50 years, member of the Sons of Norway, and a member of Salem Lutheran Church in Longville. Roald was an avid hunter and fisherman who loved the outdoors. His most precious time was spent enjoying his family.

   The family that Roald joins again are his parents, two sisters Ivy and Elizabeth, and brothers, Roger, Charlie, Bill, and Ellis.

   Those he leaves behind to cherish his memory are his wife Margit, son John Tormondsen, Sr. of Stamford, CT, sisters, Mary Schliep of Grand Marais, MN, and Faye Coffee of Fridley, MN, grandchildren Erin (Ben) Powers of Cornwall, VT, and John Tormondsen, Jr. (Maria Golub) of New York City, NY, four great grandchildren, Henry, George, Thomas and Charles, other relatives, and friends.

   A Celebration of Life for Roald will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, July 18, 2026 at Salem Lutheran Church in Longville, MN. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. Pastor Trish Jorgenson will officiate. Inurnment will be held in Salem Lutheran Cemetery following the service.
