  Information for 100, 75, 50 and 25  year news briefs was researched and gathered by Renee Geving and Cec McKeig from Cass County newspaper archives at the Cass County Historical Society.    

100 Years Ago

July 6, 1926

   Word has been received that Mr. and Mrs. Leo Brevik have a young son named Emmet Orlando in honor of his grandfathers.

J.D. Huset is the baker at the Walker Bakery. Before leaving to visit his old home at Starbuck, he baked three times the usual amount of bread. By Sunday morning, there was not a loaf of bread left in the shop.

   Joe Simpson of Remer, brother of F.A. Simpson, passed away after 5 weeks of illness, leaving his wife and little daughter.

 75 Years Ago

July 5, 1951

   John Milton, who arrived June 30th and weighed 8 lbs. 9.5 oz. will make his home with Mr. and Mrs. Erwin Sumption, for the next 21 years. 

   Mrs. Elverna Erickson and Mrs. Elsie Toffle called on Gladys Myers and Mary Kibbller on Friday afternoon.

   On July 4th the Turtle Lake community held an old Settler’s picnic on the Clarence Hopen farm, formerly the Ernest Beard farm.

50 Years Ago

July 2, 1976

   Mrs. James Pope has been named as chairman of “Breath of Life” campaign for Hackensack.

   On July 7th the Library Board is sponsoring another fundraising rummage and bake sale at the old firehall in Longville.

   Mr. and Mrs. Bill Johnson Sr. of Longville will be honored with an open house on July 11 to celebrate their golden wedding anniversary at the Longville Community church.

25 Years Ago

July 4, 2001 

   Tom Dollins, 15, son of Tom and Kathy Dollins of Longville, has been named Grand Marshal of the 4th of July parade. He returned in June after a successful heart transplant at the Mayo Clinic. He was selected as a symbol of bravery and a positive attitude during a difficult time while awaiting his transplant.

   Thora Janice Wheeler, 80, died June 28th. She was born at Trelipe Lake to Carl and Wilhelmina (Teschke) Bluhm and attended the Snell country school in Trelipe township. She married Clarence Wheeler in 1940 and became a lifelong Remer area resident. 

   Christina Baker, daughter of Pam and Mike Baker of Outing, graduated from the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth on May 10th. She was awarded a Bachelor of Arts degree in nursing with honors.
