Deep Portage Offers Outdoor Adventure and Creative Programs in Early July

Deep Portage Learning Center continues its summer lineup of public programs with a variety of outdoor adventures and hands-on activities scheduled for late June and early July. Programs are open to the public and offer opportunities for participants of all ages to explore nature, challenge themselves and learn new skills.

The first event is a Climbing Wall program on June 30, with sessions offered from 10 a.m. to noon and again from 2 to 4 p.m. Participants can test their abilities on Deep Portage’s 35-foot climbing wall while trained staff members provide belay support. Multiple climbing routes of varying difficulty levels make the activity accessible for both beginners and experienced climbers. The program is open to ages 7 and older and is offered for a free-will donation. Each session is limited to 20 participants. Attendees should meet at the flagpole and bring closed-toe shoes and shorts that extend below the knee.

On July 3, visitors can enjoy panoramic views from Deep Portage’s 55-foot observation tower during the Tower Open event. Guests may visit the tower at their own pace by following signs from the parking lot. The self-guided experience offers one of the best vantage points in the area and a chance to take in the surrounding forests and lakes from above.

Later that day, from 2 to 4 p.m., Deep Portage will host a holiday-themed Scavenger Hunt. Teams will race to locate and collect items from a provided list, with the winning team earning a prize. The activity is open to all ages and is available for a free-will donation. Participants should meet at the flagpole and bring a water bottle.

Creativity and nature come together on July 7 during Homemade Camo with Foraged Dyes from 1 to 4 p.m. Participants will use plants gathered from the landscape to create natural dyes over a campfire and learn ecoprinting techniques to decorate fabric with unique camouflage-inspired patterns. The program is open to ages 10 and older and is available for a free-will donation. Space is limited to 10 shirts. Participants should bring a water bottle and a white or light-colored cotton T-shirt. The group will meet at the Interpretive Center.
