Deep Portage Offers Summer Programs for All Ages

Deep Portage Learning Center is offering a wide variety of public programs throughout the summer, providing opportunities for residents, seasonal visitors, and families to explore the outdoors, learn new skills, and enjoy nature. Whether you’ve lived in the area for years, own a cabin nearby, or are simply visiting, Deep Portage has something for everyone.

Programs range from recreation-based activities such as canoeing, orienteering, climbing wall adventures, and archery to more relaxed nature classes, arts and crafts, and wood-fired oven events. Most programs are offered for a free-will donation, with only a few exceptions. Pre-registration is preferred. A complete schedule and registration information can be found at deep-portage.org/public-programs.

Among the upcoming programs are several opportunities for participants to get outdoors and experience the natural beauty of Deep Portage.

On June 16, participants can enjoy a Canoeing Adventure with sessions offered from 10 a.m. to noon and 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Guests are welcome to bring fishing gear or join Deep Portage staff for a paddle around Bass Pond and even across the portage to Big Deep Lake. The program is open to ages 8 and older when using Deep Portage life jackets; younger children may participate if they bring their own life jacket.

The Birding Program will be held on June 18, with sessions from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. Led by a Deep Portage naturalist, participants will explore one of Cass County’s premier birding destinations while learning tips and tricks for identifying local bird species. The morning session is designed for ages 7 and up, while the afternoon session welcomes all ages with a focus on younger children.

One of Deep Portage’s most popular classes, Charlie to Base Orienteering, returns on June 23. Sessions will be offered from 10 a.m. to noon and 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Participants will learn basic orienteering skills before navigating a course through the woods using a map, compass, and walkie-talkie as they work their way through a course in the Deep Portage forest.

All three programs are offered on a free-will donation basis, and space is limited. Participants are encouraged to register in advance to reserve their spot.
