100 Years Ago

August 2, 1926

   Joe Jackson went on duty as a night watchman at the Indian sanatorium Monday.

   Elvin Hanson and Frank Metzer are busy making hay on the Peterson farm on Island Lake. Hanson is one of the successful dairymen near Remer.

   Mildred Klein is assisting at the Lewis resort on Thunder Lake.

   A Cass County feller named Rand, fell in with a cannibal band. And what did he do, but tame the whole crew, ‘till they fought to eat out of his hand.

 75 Years Ago

August 3, 1951

   The Schueffel Hardware store at Backus was burglarized Tuesday morning and several hundred dollars’ worth of fishing equipment and rifle ammunition was taken.

   Orville Johnson of Longville drove to Park Rapids and brought back a new Ford from Parkway Motor Co. where Ray Englehart is employed.

   Willie Arola arrived home to Turtle Lake township Saturday from Crawfordsville, Indiana for a few days’ vacation.

50 Years Ago

July 31, 1976

  The Remer Mobile Station has a new lessee, John Sawvel, son of the Richard Sawvel’s who purchased Dewey and Lydia Martin home on Litle Bass Lake. 

   Pam Giffen was the guest of honor at a bridal shower held in the Vets Hall at Federal Dam. Charlene Lego and Heidi Stephany were hostesses.

   Edwin Brown, born in Federal Dam in 1932, married Doris Emery and made their home at Whipholt. They had three sons and one daughter. He died July 22 at the age of 44.

25 Years Ago

August 7, 2001 

   Louis Brochhagen died Jully 28th. Born in 1926 in Pine River to Louis and Emma (Goltz) Brochhagen, he was a graduate of Backus High school and a Navy veteran. He married Vilma Semmler in 1947. He served on Woodrow and Ponto Lake township boards.

   Mary Betty Moran died July 18th. She was born to Albert and Elsie Walters in 1917. She married Red Puyear and moved to Longville in 1947 where her husband died in 1948. She married James Moran in 1981. She owned her own beauty shop in Longville. 

   Lois Tufts died July 31st. She was born August 24, 1933 in Hackensack to Ray and Genevieve (Titus) Bannister. She is buried at Hillcrest cemetery in Hackensack.
