Sheriff’s Corner - Artificial intelligence and using it safely

By By Sheriff Bryan Welk | Comments: 0 | Leave a comment

We were recently asked about covering the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI), including the risks and safety concerns associated with it, particularly from a law enforcement and public safety perspective. Since this is relatively new technology, we are continuing to learn more about its uses and limitations, just like you are. We will break down the basics of AI, how it can be used safely and what to watch out for.

The Basics of Artificial Intelligence: What It Is, What to Watch Out For, and How to Use It Safely

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is no longer a futuristic idea—it’s already part of everyday life. From voice assistants and recommendation systems to chatbots and image generators, AI tools are becoming increasingly common. While AI can be incredibly useful, it’s important to understand its basics, limitations, and how to use it responsibly.

What Is Artificial Intelligence? Artificial Intelligence refers to computer systems designed to perform tasks that typically require human intelligence. These tasks include understanding language, recognizing images, solving problems, and making predictions based on data.

Most AI systems today are narrow AI, meaning they are trained to perform specific tasks rather than think like a human. For example:

   • A chatbot can answer questions or write text.

   • A recommendation system suggests videos or products.

   • Image tools can recognize faces or generate artwork.

AI does not have emotions, consciousness, or true understanding—it works by identifying patterns in large amounts of data.

AI is used across many fields, including:

   • Education: tutoring tools, writing assistance, and language translation

   • Healthcare: medical image analysis and scheduling support

   • Business: customer service chatbots and data analysis

   • Entertainment: music, video, and content recommendations

When used correctly, AI can save time, improve productivity, and help people learn and create more efficiently.

What to Be Aware Of When Using AI

Despite its benefits, AI also comes with important risks and limitations:

   1. AI Can Be Wrong - AI systems can generate confident-sounding but incorrect information. This is especially risky when using AI for research, health advice, or legal topics. Always verify important information with reliable sources.

   2. Bias in AI - AI learns from human-created data, which means it can reflect existing biases or unfair assumptions. This can affect hiring tools, facial recognition, or content moderation if not carefully managed.

   3. Privacy Concerns - Some AI tools collect and store user data. Sharing sensitive personal information—such as passwords, financial details, or private conversations—can put your privacy at risk.

   4. Over-Reliance - Relying too heavily on AI can reduce critical thinking and creativity. AI should support human decision-making, not replace it.

How to Use AI Safely and Responsibly

To get the most benefit from AI while minimizing risks, follow these best practices:

   • Think critically: Treat AI output as a starting point, not a final answer.

   • Protect personal data: Avoid sharing private or sensitive information.

   • Double-check facts: Especially for academic, professional, or health-related use.

   • Use AI ethically: Do not use AI to cheat, spread misinformation, or harm others.

   • Understand the tool: Learn what the AI is designed to do—and what it isn’t.

AI will continue to evolve and play a larger role in society. As it becomes more powerful, understanding how it works and how to use it responsibly will be essential. Education, transparency, and ethical use will determine whether AI becomes a positive force or a source of harm.

While this information is currently valid, it is likely to change quickly. AI is a powerful tool that can enhance learning, creativity, and efficiency—but only when used wisely. By understanding its basics, being aware of its limitations, and using it safely, individuals can take advantage of AI’s benefits while avoiding common pitfalls. The key is balance: using AI as a helpful assistant, not an unquestioned authority.
