   In rural Cass County, our greatest resource isn’t timber, water, or land—it’s our people.

   For many older adults and neighbors with disabilities living off the beaten path, staying safely and comfortably in their own homes shouldn’t mean facing isolation or everyday hurdles alone. Yet, when the miles between towns stretch wide, simple tasks like getting a ride to a medical appointment, fixing a loose porch step, or staying socially connected can become major challenges. That is where Faith in Action for Cass County steps in.

   Our local nonprofit connects volunteers directly with neighborly needs. Local volunteers turn their personal time into lifelines—providing safe transportation, helping with homemaking and chores, and installing vital home modifications. But our mission goes beyond physical tasks. We know that loneliness can impact health just as deeply as a missed doctor’s visit. That is why Faith in Action offers friendly visiting for folks who want to stay socially connected, as well as crucial respite care to give dedicated family caregivers a much-needed break.

   One of our most frequent services is transportation. With a staff of only three full-time employees, one part-time employee, a volunteer Board of Directors,  and over 130 volunteers, we coordinate and deliver a remarkable number of rides each year to hospitals, clinics, specialty care centers, and treatment facilities throughout the region.

   Just in the past two and a half years, our volunteers have provided over 1,500 medical rides. That means on over 1,500 occasions, Faith in Action removed the transportation barrier and dependably got neighbors to their appointments. In doing so, our volunteers contributed over 6,000 hours of unpaid time and drove a total of 153,000+ miles. While volunteers can request mileage reimbursement, many do not.

   In addition to medical rides, our volunteers drive neighbors to the grocery store, hardware store, bank, church, and community events—the everyday errands that keep all of us independent and connected.

   Just like with all of our services, a ride is so much more than a ride. It is connection—connection to other people, to community, to home. And the connection goes both ways. Our volunteers love to connect with people and lend a helping hand. It is in the giving that we receive. All of our services are designed to help people remain safely in their homes, live more comfortably and independently, and stay connected.

   Volunteering with us doesn’t require a rigid schedule. You choose when and how you want to help, whether it’s sharing a cup of coffee during a friendly visit, driving a neighbor to town, or helping with a quick home project. Independence is a community effort.

   Faith in Action for Cass County is currently facing an annual funding gap of approximately $140,000 between our operating budget and identified funding sources. Reductions in both state and federal funding over the past two years have significantly impacted our ability to sustain operations. While we continue to pursue grants and other funding opportunities, the reality is that community, individual, and institutional support will be essential to maintaining the services upon which so many people depend. Your financial support ensures our neighbors aren’t just getting by, but are truly empowered to live their best lives.

   Our raffle is our largest fundraiser and it is currently taking place at many events throughout the community. The drawing will be held on November 12, 2026, at Rendezvous Brewing in Hackensack.
