  Information for 100, 75, 50 and 25  year news briefs was researched and gathered by Renee Geving and Cec McKeig from Cass County newspaper archives at the Cass County Historical Society.    

100 Years Ago

September 9, 1926

   Alverna and Berneal Vangen of Inguadona left Monday to attend school at Remer.

   P. A. Starr, the Onigum school teacher, moved over from his farm Monday. Misses Mary and Maggie Bedeau of Turtle Lake visited their aunt, Mrs. Richard Day, on Monday.

   Mr. and Mrs. A. B. Lego left Federal Dam on Monday for St. Paul where they will make their home.

 75 Years Ago

September 14, 1951

   Mr. and Mrs. Steve Winehandel and son Richard left Hackensack for their home in St. Paul after spending the summer at their resort, “Steve’s” on Big Birch Lake.

   Tom Piprude and son Johnnie are building a very nice, five-room house on Smokey Point, Turtle Lake township, and hope to move soon.

   We are sorry to hear that Fred Kruckow, Ponto Lake township, was gored and trampled by an enraged bull last week and is still in bad shape.

50 Years Ago

September 2, 1976

  A horse show was held at the Harold Myers place at Remer with participants being former members of the Saddle Club.

   A farmer who lives down at Leader, once took the old mare out to feed ’er. When she started to run, to the bridle he hung, cause he knew that tomorrow he’d need ’er.

   Donald and Mary Welk are the proud parents of their second son, Brian Richard, who weighed in at 8 lbs. 8 ozs.

   Mr. and Mrs. Jim Wickham from Portland, Oregon were in Blind Lake on Monday calling on friends. He is a former resident. They called on the Maurice Daubers and Mrs. Will Shepard.

25 Years Ago

September 11, 2001 

   Rolland “Chuck” Winger died September 7th. He was born August 19, 1917, to Arthur and Bessie (Nichols) Winger in Remer. He attended school there. He worked at the CCC Camp #2708 at Park Rapids during the Depression. He married Scenia Livgard in 1946 at Remer. He worked for the Erie Mining Co. in Aurora-Hoyt Lakes for many years and retired from there in 1979. He then owned a sawmill in Remer for the next 12 years. 

   Barbara Klitzke was born December 12, 1939, on the family farm in Slater township to Walter and Marjorie (Mix) Frank. She attended school in Remer. She married Marvin Mugaas in 1957 in South Dakota. They divorced and she married Willard Klitzke in 1967. She owned a couple of restaurants in her lifetime. She died September 6th.
