   To the Editor: 

   Questions are being raised about whether the new Rock Arch Rapids structure is contributing to declining water levels on the Woman Lake chain. I believe those questions deserve an independent, fact-based examination.

   To be clear, I am not claiming that Rock Arch Rapids is responsible for the lower water levels. The area is experiencing drought, and Woman Lake has historically experienced significant natural fluctuations during dry summers. Those factors must be considered.

   However, there is also circumstantial evidence that deserves attention. From July 1 through August 11, 2026, Woman Lake reportedly dropped 4.8 inches, Girl Lake 5.52 inches, and Child Lake 5.76 inches while water continued to flow through the Rock Arch Rapids structure.

   The Minnesota DNR has stated that the new structure was designed to maintain the previous runout elevation. If that is the case, an independent engineering review should be able to determine whether the new structure is performing as intended under today’s low-flow conditions.

   This isn’t about assigning blame. It is about getting accurate answers.

   Suppose the independent review determines that Rock Arch Rapids is not contributing to the lower lake levels; that finding should reassure lake residents and property owners. If it identifies a problem, then we will have the information necessary to address it.

   With so much at stake for the Woman Lake chain, an independent engineering and hydraulic review seems like a reasonable request.

   We don’t need speculation from either side. We need facts.
