100 Years Ago

September 2, 1926

   Joe Bellanger, Charles Aitkin and George Fairbanks, with their families, left Onigum for Big Rice Lake on the White Earth reservation Monday to gather wild rice.

   Jon Phalen of Inguadona is leaving for Virginia this week where he expects to begin his winter’s work as a cook in a camp. George Kline of Wabedo hauled a load of posts to Glenwood this week.

   If all folks lived within their incomes, you’d find less people around a garage and more in a ten-cent store.

 75 Years Ago

September 7, 1951

   Erwin Kibbler and Dale Peterson came home to Federal Dam for a visit and returned to Cleveland, North Dakota on Saturday.

   Bud Cleveland and J.D. Connell of Boy River took turns piloting a four-passenger training plane from Brainerd to Park Rapids. Olaf Johnson went along for the ride.

   Mr. Hemmelman made a trip to Walker Monday to bring one of the Fowler girls home to Blind Lake township.

50 Years Ago

August 19, 1976

  The younger confirmation group from Salem Lutheran church enjoyed a canoe trip on the Big Fork for several days. Pastor Haselhuhn and Arnie Pirsig accompanied them.

Mike Lego, Federal Dam, left for Alaska with Oscar Nyvall. They will be employed there.

   Marine Private James Lake, son of Mr. Toney Lake of Boy River, has completed the infantry combat training course at the Marine Corps. Base, Camp Pendleton, Calif.

25 Years Ago

September 4, 2001 

   A confirmed cougar killing was the first In Minnesota since 1897, although an unconfirmed killing was reported in 1971. The cougar attacked a dog five miles north of Big Sandy Lake in Aitkin County and was shot on the porch of the home.

   George Williams attended services at Fairview cemetery and saw that it needed TLC. Headstones were reset, roads repaired, and a granite entry sign with a reflection bench were put in place. Although it was his vision, donations from the community have provided the funds. 

   Kristie Breyfogle and Aaron Breyfogle took a pair of muskies from Leech Lake with guide help from their father, Steve, who is a guide for Tonga’s Launch Service in Federal Dam.
