   Join us on Wednesday, September 2, from 5 to 6 p.m., for music and a special Benefit Dinner at the Union Congregational Church (UCC) supporting Paws and Claws, the dynamic and effective Animal Rescue and Resort located right here in Hackensack. What a treasure we have with this amazing no-kill, non-profit facility that was founded in 2017 by co-founders Betty and Jack Thomas, with its mission to address the lack of regional shelters in Cass County. Shelley Block has been the Executive Director of Paws and Claws since Dec of 2022 and relayed, “ I can honestly say that I love every bit of what I do. Imagine coming to work every day surrounded by a team of people who have enormous hearts and genuine compassion for animals and their well-being. The team at Paws and Claws is exceptional. Their love and passion for animals can be seen in everything they do. Rescue work isn’t always easy. It can bring challenges, difficult decisions and moments that tug deeply at our heart strings. But then comes the moment when an animal finds its forever home and our hearts smile.”

    To date, Paws and Claws has helped more than 2,900 animals find their forever homes. Their work doesn’t stop at adoption. About two and a half years ago, Paws and Claws began a community outreach program designed to bring the joy and companionship of animals to people who may need it most. They regularly bring animals to nursing homes and assisted living communities. Many of the residents had pets at one time in their lives, a reminder of the connection between people and animals. Staff have also visited the Walker and Pine River elementary schools to teach students how to safely approach a dog and what not to do.

   The dogs and cats who come to Paws and Claws arrive in many ways. Some arrive as strays, abandoned animals, or beloved pets whose families can no longer care for them because of difficult life circumstances. But one question always remains: Where would these animals go if Paws and Claws were not here? Paws and Claws is proud of how far it has come since September of 2017 and are excited about what the future holds. Shelley stated, “Most of all, we are grateful to everyone who has adopted, volunteered, donated, supported our mission or simply opened their heart to an animal in need.”

   The UCC is honored to host this fundraiser in support of Paws and Claws. All free-will donation proceeds from this evening of community, conversation, and comfort food, will go toward the financial needs of such a unique facility and the products necessary to support all the animals.

Dig into Tater Tot Hotdish, buns, salad and yummy desserts all made by Tammy Lindberg, the UCC Chef.  Music by Northwoods Acoustic Jam will be playing live as supporters munch along to the beat of these talented musicians.
