100 Years Ago

August 19, 1926

   Mr. C.J. Woolley recently gave the Longville school library a large collection of books.

   The Bakke family moved back here to Federal Dam after living in Duluth the past year.

   Miss Doris Colburn is visiting the B.R. Yochum home in Kego for a few days and intends to teach near Grand Rapids this coming year.

 75 Years Ago

August 24, 1951

   Matthew Francis Vanetta married in 1891 to Agnes Sloan and four children were born to them. They came to Cass Co. in 1918 to a farm four miles north of Remer. He sold the farm in 1940 after the death of his wife and went to live with a son in Milwaukee. He’s buried at Remer.

   The 46th Annual County fair at Pine River was one of the best attended fairs in history. Horse racing fans saw Donald Denny win 1st place, followed by Don McAllister and Leland Beaver.

   A.F Myers, age 82, and a longtime resident of Boy Island died August 17th at his son Ronald’s home in Buffalo, MN. He came to the Island from Webster, New York with two small boys and his brother. He is buried in New York with his wife.

50 Years Ago

August 12, 1976

  Ted Carpenter is now providing regular garbage and rubbish removal for Remer, Boy River, Federal Dam, Outing and Shovel Lake.

   Mr. and Mrs. Harry Zaske and daughter Jean and husband from Faribault called on Mrs. Will Shepard. They have a cabin at Wolf Lodge.

   There was a good crowd at the Garden Clinic at the Harold Mix home. Leona has an experimental garden on her property. The Cass County agent and plant pathologists from the U of MN were present to answer questions.

August 21, 2001 

   A man said he married his wife for her looks but not the ones she’s been giving him lately.

   The first Northern Outdoor Sports Fair will be held at the Pintail Club, Hwy 200 at the 140-mile marker. Rusty Lilyquist will be giving a fishing tips and techniques seminar.

   Longville Lions Club president Roger Novak presents a check for $300 to Jack Shaffer of the Longville Community Choir to help insure the vocal efforts of the choir continue on key.
