Camino Hackensack offers five-day walking pilgrimage through the northwoods
“Wanderer, your footsteps are the road, and nothing more; wanderer, there is no road. The road is made by walking.” — Antonio Machado
Residents seeking a blend of physical activity, spiritual reflection and community are invited to participate in Camino Hackensack, a five-day guided walking retreat scheduled for Oct. 7-11, 2026.
Organized through Adult Learning at Union Congregational Church in Hackensack, the retreat is modeled after Spain’s renowned Camino de Santiago, the historic 500-mile pilgrimage made familiar to many through the film The Way, starring Martin Sheen. This year’s event marks the second Camino Hackensack and is designed to provide a similar experience close to home.
Participants will walk approximately 40 to 45 miles over five days along the scenic Paul Bunyan State Forest Trail. Each day begins with a spiritual reflection and concludes with an opportunity for participants to share insights gathered during the journey.

The retreat combines periods of quiet reflection with opportunities for fellowship and recreation, including a first-night barbecue, a visit to a local brewery, swimming in the lake and evening games.
Past participants have described the experience as both peaceful and transformative. One pilgrim shared that the retreat taught them to “take one step at a time, let go, and breathe,” while another appreciated the quiet beauty of the walks and the time for personal reflection. Others cited the friendships and meaningful conversations formed along the trail as highlights of the experience.
The retreat is led by Laura and John Parr, Stacy Hirschi and Linnea Dietrich, all of whom have completed the full Camino de Santiago in Spain. They hope to offer a local alternative for those who are unable to travel overseas but still wish to experience the spirit of the pilgrimage.
The registration fee is $150, which includes all meals, optional lodging at the church, spiritual guidance, a commemorative T-shirt and walking guides. Scholarships are available, and participation is limited to 15 walkers.
Registration is filling quickly. For more information or to register, contact Linnea Dietrich at [email protected].
