100 Years Ago

August 12, 1926

   Rain is badly needed in this section. Farmers having alfalfa are especially anxious for moisture to help make the second cutting what it should be.

   All the curves on State Highway No. 34 to Remer are being brushed out this week.

   Sarah Fairbanks was found deceased in her son’s home in Federal Dam, death being due to heart trouble. She was an old pioneer having lived here 50 years ago.

 75 Years Ago

August 17, 1951

   Mary L. Lambert, a resident of Woodrow township and Hackensack for over 28 years, passed away at age 70. She is buried at Evergreen cemetery at Walker.

   Reburial services for Wayne Fromback, a casualty of the Korean War, were held August 3rd. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Fromback of Whipholt and was 22 years old at the time of his death.

   In January of 1855 Phillip Starr married Ada Mann in Oklahoma. He came to Minnesota in 1913 where he combined farming with teaching, most recently at Onigum village. He passed away August 10th.

50 Years Ago

August 5, 1976

  Warren Bridge and Mr. Sunde were interviewed on KNMT about lowering the water level in Leech Lake.

   Fred and Idell Smith of Little Falls came to Remer on Sunday evening to visit her father, Charles Fletcher.

   Mr. and Mrs. Harold Ford have moved a trailer house on their place, the former Jim Shepard place in Blind Lake township.

   A Cass County man named Walt, saw a man stealing shoes and yelled “halt”.  When the man went to run, Walt up with his gun and gave him a dose of rock salt.

25 Years Ago

August 14, 2001 

   A pair of thunderstorms Wednesday and Thursday left 1000 homes without  power. The hardest hit areas were from Breezy Point north to Longville and east to the Emily/Outing area. Electricity was restored Wednesday only to be knocked out again on Thursday.

   Robert “Bob” Romness died August 7th. He was born in 1916 in White Bear Lake to Ole and Cora (Arcand) Romness. Bob attended schools in Remer. He married Irene Cunningham in 1945 at Hill City. Their home was in Remer where he worked 30 years for the Minnesota Department of Transportation before retiring in 1978.
