Elementary Principal Janessa Green reported on a variety of activities and progress. Green stated the district is taking a new hybrid approach to ATV safety training by allowing students to complete the online portion at home while still conducting the required field test at school. The change is designed to increase family involvement while preserving classroom time. Early participation has been positive, with some students moving quickly through the coursework.
In early childhood programs, it was shared students recently wrapped up ocean and space-themed learning units and will host upcoming ECFE sessions in April. At the elementary level, Green mentioned students celebrated the end of the third quarter with a schoolwide bingo event recognizing “Eagle Pride.” With Approximately 88 percent of students qualified to participate it was hectic and fun with all the students running through the halls.
Students are also benefiting from hands-on learning experiences outside the classroom. Fifth graders recently participated in an ice fishing trip, while fourth graders visited the Headwaters Science Center for a science-focused field trip. Green also noted a positive trend in student behavior. Major incidents in March dropped to 17, compared to 30 during the same month last year, with fewer physical incidents and more minor infractions being reported.
High School Principal Mary Yakibchuk highlighted ongoing academic planning, student activities and upcoming events. While MCA test results will not be available until fall, the district continues to use other assessment data and stakeholder feedback to guide planning and instruction.
Yakibchuk also pointed to the success of the Northland Storm speech team, where three students recently placed in the top five at a competition. Section competition is scheduled for next week, with the possibility of advancing to state. The Northland Storm robotics team is also preparing for the Granite City Regional competition. Now in its seventh season, the team will compete in a challenge requiring robots to interact and compete in coordinated game play.
As the school year enters its final stretch, Yakibchuk noted the fast pace of spring activities, including midterms, graduation preparations and awards events.
Superintendent Mark Morrisson provided updates on facilities, regional collaboration and technology improvements. Maintenance priorities include addressing roof leaks caused by winter conditions and planning lighting upgrades in older portions of the building.
Morrisson also reported on a proposed regional restructuring involving the Area Learning Center and special education services. The transition, now expected in 2027, would place services under a larger cooperative. While still under discussion, the change is not expected to significantly impact the district.
