Looking Back - Do you remember when...



  Information for 100, 75, 50 and 25  year news briefs was researched and gathered by Renee Geving and Cec McKeig from Cass County newspaper archives at the Cass County Historical Society.    

100 Years Ago

April 14, 1926

   Richard Day of Onigum was over from his sugar camp Monday and reports that sap is not running very good on account of the cold weather.

   Walter Nieme has been driving the bus at Longville for a few days while Ray Tabaka has been engaged in other business.

   Contractor O’Neil at Kego township is busy getting things ready at the camp so work can start on the new road as soon as the ground is fit.

 75 Years Ago

April 10, 1951

   A Basket Social at the Turtle Lake town hall is sponsored by the Turtle Lake 4-H Club today to raise funds for the 4-H  building at the Pine River fairgrounds.

   Mr. and Mrs. Handeland returned to Longville and opened their restaurant for business. They spent the winter on the West Coast and in Minneapolis where he had employment.

  The Boy River school will be closed another week due to bad roads.

   A Cass County feller named Hope, lit a campaign cigar for a smoke; and one little puff was surely enough as it burnt like the end of a rope.

50 Years Ago

April 9, 1976

   The 65-year-old library at Walker was destroyed by fire. A fuel tank in the basement exploded and the fire was impossible to contain. The library building was built in 1911 under a Dale Carnegie grant.

   Mr. and Mrs. Woodrow Wright from Hutchinson are at their cabin on Lake Louise in Blind Lake township.

   Mr. and Mrs. Dave Schroeder of Hackensack announce the arrival of their first child, Renea, who was born on March 25th.

 25 Years Ago

April 10, 2001 

   The finishing touches are being added to a new 10-unit assisted living facility, Laurel Lodge Assisted Living Home, south of Remer. Dan and Wendy Winger and Dean and Debra Engen will open the home next month.

   Alex Marion Eggert was born to Tom and Heidi Eggert of rural Hackensack on March 23rd. Grandparents are Tom and Joy Eggert of Brainerd and Rod and Harriet Mouw of Longville.

   The Northland High School Spanish Club recently traveled to San Antonio, Texas to experience firsthand the influence that the Spanish culture has had on our country.
