  Information for 100, 75, 50 and 25  year news briefs was researched and gathered by Renee Geving and Cec McKeig from Cass County newspaper archives at the Cass County Historical Society.    

100 Years Ago

May 14, 1925

 Miss Nellie Craig had an attack of pleurisy last week and was unable to attend to her duties as a clerk at Fuller’s store in Longville.

   A Cass County feller named Brewer went out with his Ford on a tour and the roads were so smooth that he kept on the move till he found himself down at Le Sueur.

   J.B. Fuller is making considerable improvement on his farm on Long Lake.

75 Years Ago

May 12, 1950

   The worst spring breakup in years is causing trouble with railroad beds. There was 6 inches of water on the Onigum road, and the fish were crossing the road.

   Mr. and Mrs. James McDowell and family moved from Hackensack to Owatonna where he has been employed for some time, another farm for sale.

   The Boy River population is increasing. The latest arrival is the Leonard Gish family who plan to operate overnight cabins and a boat livery.

50 Years Ago

May 15, 1975

   On Tuesday evening April 29th the Cub Scout Pack No. 85 of Longville held a first annual Pinewood Derby at the elementary school with 20 boys participating.

   Remer’s new policeman is Edwin Meany. He was raised near Mora and later lived in Minneapolis and more recently with his retired parents on Hwy. 7.

   Pappy (Leroy D.) Woodford homesteaded a farm near Longville with his parents in 1915. He blazed a trail connecting Pine Lake grade and Co. Road 5, which he named the Woodtick Trail. He played the violin and drums at various dance areas.

 25 Years Ago

May 16, 2000 

   Despite 30 plus mile per hour winds, dropping the wind chill to near zero, sleet, snow, and rain, the public landing at Woman Lake was full of hopeful fishermen. 

   Matthew Coalwell of Hackensack earned a Bachelor of Arts degree, majoring in biology education at Concordia College.

   Mia Peterson, daughter of Pam and Charles Peterson of Swatara, was a member of the 1999-2000 basketball team at the College of Saint Benedict in St. Joseph
