Scam information from Cass County Sheriff’s Dept.

Cass County Sheriff Bryan Welk reports that the Cass County Sheriff’s Office and Walker Police Department have received a report of a caller ID Scam, in which the victim reported receiving a phone call from the “Cass County Sheriff’s Office” and phone number 218-547-1424. The victim reported the male caller advised that the party had a warrant for their arrest and that they needed to take care of it; by paying for and gathering pre-loaded gift cards from the Dollar General and then calling a phone number to pay for the warrant with the gift cards. While this is not a new fraud tactic it is the first in recent years that we have been made aware of scammers using our identity and phone number to initiate the communication and fraud.

It is important to know that Law Enforcement NEVER calls or emails individuals requesting money or action to be taken in this way.

Scammers often pose as law enforcement using the following methods:

   • Demanding payment for a missed court date, jury duty or other legal matter

   • Claiming there is a warrant issued in your name

   • Threatening or issuing arrest warrant unless you pay a fine

   • Directing you to buy a prepaid money transfer card and give the card number to them

   • Faking their phone number so it appears valid on caller ID also known as caller id Spoof tactic.

   • Using real names of actual local law enforcement officers, especially in the jurisdiction or area that you reside.

With all forms of scam and fraud it is important to Protect yourself.

   • Refuse to give the scammer any information

   • Don’t send them any payments

   • Hang up and don’t trust that caller ID shows their real identity

   • Record their number and save any voicemails

   • Look up the real number for the law enforcement agency the scammer mentioned and contact that office directly

Sheriff Welk shares that “The best way for someone to protect themselves from these scams is simply to hang up”. “Don’t let your guard down and don’t be intimidated into providing personal details or financial information. As always please contact the Cass County Sheriff’s Office if you have questions about a phone call or email received or think that you have been victim of a scam.”
