The Northland board meet for a special meeting on Tues., Apr. 22 to discuss and decide on a new administrative model. Currently the administrative model at Northland is an elementary principal, a dean of students/behavioral interventionist and a high school principal/superintendent.
At the last regular board meeting Board Chair Marc Ruyak suggested administration and the board consider going with a different administration model due to the feeling the current model with a half superintendent and half high school principal is not working. Ruyak stated he felt the staff and students needed the presence of a full time high school principal to access anytime during the day. Also, it had been mentioned during a previous meeting by Mary Yakibchuk, high school principal/superintendent, she felt she wasn’t providing enough attention to both positions and stated in her opinion the board should consider a different administration model.
During the special meeting Yakibchuk shared two model possibilities. The first was a full-time elementary principal, full-time high school principal and .5 superintendent. The second possibility was having all three positions as a full-time employee. During discussion it was mentioned before the current model the district had a model with just a .5 superintendent and it was felt there was not enough presence from the superintendent.
It was also shared the cost difference between the two separate models would only be approximately $7,000 as if the district decided to hire a full-time superintendent they could reorganize some other positions within the school and add those duties to the superintendent, therefore, possibly eliminating some positions.
The board unanimously voted to approve the 3.0 model which would include full-time positions for elementary principal, high school principal and superintendent.
The board has scheduled the following meetings: a policy committee meeting, Mon., May 5 at 5:30 p.m. and the regular meeting, Wed., May 14 at 5:30 p.m. all meetings are held at Northland High School.
